The "NammaVeetuPayan" image that Dhanush gained was through his comical timing and the casual talk in his romcom's. Now since the movieAadukalam he has acted in seriously scripted movies and Naiyyaandi has been leisurely promoted as a light hearted comical flick with romance and family segments galore. Two National awardees, Sargunam and Dhanush have joined hands along with the cutie pie Nazriya, Soori, Sathyan, ImmanAnnachi to come up with a tale that is loosely based on the Malayalam flick MeleperambilAanVeedu. you are watch it in youtube .
A whiff into the first half would definitely make you feel as if it has taken you back into the 90's be it the camera work, BGM or even the light hearted comedy segments. Again, Dhanush basks on his boy next door image, tries to woo the new girl in the town Nazriya. How would a Tamil romantic movie not have the protagonist without a gang of pals? Well, the movie's limelight is shared by the gang of Immanannachi, Sathyan, Soori and Sriman.
To an extent you might feel that they sometimes steal the magic from Dhanush on one liners and comical timings. But what amazes you most that an award winning director who showcased Social elements with comedy has come up with a rather tested storyline and a half-baked script. Dhanush tries his hand solidly to wooNazriya with a series of ups and downs, and yes predictably the songs flow in but never at the appropriate time. The foreign location songs look amiss and appear as if they have been filmed in a hurried manner.
In the first half Dhanush is seen winning over Nazriya, who in turn breaks her father's promise as it leads on to the couple eloping predictably. As it drags through the interval, the second half is more likely to go well with the audience as it forays into the failed attempts by Dhanush's over aged brothers,Sriman and Sathya to make Nazriya fall for them. Playing the role of a KuthuVilaku shop owner, Dhanush employs Nazirya and the second half takes up some value for money with the much required laugh.
Director Sargunam too appears to have fallen for the commercial dose of film making, a calculated risk no doubt but proves a bit costly as it doesn't seem to have given the punch. The story tries hard to ride on the screenplay and that takes the movie for a drag in the first half with mediocre jokes and romance. Nazriya yet again appears like an angel with a smile, all her years of acting right from childhood seem to have paid out, yet she needs to work more when it comes to close up acting.
You might not feel that Dhanush can be credited 100% in this movie as there is very less scope to prove his prowess. All through the promotions as a light hearted flick, the attempt itself makes you try to feel the unintentional situation comedy, but somehow clicks only at parts. Too many misplaced songs and the usage of old tunes to tickle the funny bone is done and dusted technique, yet has been tried again.
The positive thing to take back is that it's a family entertainer no doubt, and the sidekicks do their job pretty well. Soori, Sriman and Sathyan do their job of entertaining well enough. The comedy as promised by the makers is evident in the second half with luminous crackers. Dhanush as usual is easy in whatever role he does, and he is a delight to watch. Apart from the Teddy bear song, Ghibran'sefforts do not click much, and the same goes to cinematography as well.
In all, there might be various reasons for the movie to have missed entertaining, the bar raised by Dhanush over the last few movies have been too high that this movie is nowhere near the line.
