Sutta Kadhai - Better as a page turner
Who wouldn't like a murder mystery? And when there is more than one to be solved, especially in a city of lazy bones. 'Sutta Kadhai' or story of the shot dead begins with a prominent man mysteriously shot dead and ends up solving multiple murders. As two constables Ramki (Balaji) and Sangili (Venkatesh) set foot in the fictitious town with a funny history and a goal to rise up above the others, they slowly come to understand that the town is a tough nut to crack. Thirumeni (Nassar) plays the role of the impossible inspector, who wouldn't budge for anything.
Battling the various hurdles, including the new constable Singam referred by the education minister himself, Ramki and Sangili set out to solve one mystery after another, starting from the murder mystery of Ottagam (MS Bhaskar).
As both the lead characters evince interest in Silandhi, the daughter of Ottagam, a tribe from the mountainous terrains of the fictitious land of Koramalai, the two get themselves in trouble both at work
place and also with the lady herself. Nanditha has played the role of stern and focused brave woman all through the film, while it is the police story that adds humour to the story. The second half of the film has a twist - quite literally. But all the fun and enthusiasm seems to pass out soon, as it gets repetitive.
The film opens like pages of a comic, which is interesting animation to look for, though you will figure out in the end that it is the story itself. Since the story is set in a hilly region, all of the two hours is rather dark. Although almost all films are fictitious, it seems to have been overly reiterated, when the point is stressed beyond threshold of necessity. Even niceties can get boring. In all, 'Sutta Kadhai' is a bright idea, which could have followed a more gripping screenplay to keep the audience involved, than just complete the procedure of getting the film done. The minor details to keep this movie stand out, have been taken utmost care to be accomplished with. Each frame is new, but not exactly impressive. The story in itself is a new concept, but could have been told better. With claims of duplication sprouting from every corner on any possible frame, it is an ordeal to convince everyone at large that the concept is indeed new. It is good news that Subu has been able to achieve this, with his creativity in each scene. No doubt that the debutante director is a promising talent.ll the characters have done justice to their roles; but there is nothing strikingly much that the film demands. This film was advertised to be dark comedy, but there is barely any comedy, but for the bloopers in the end. The story should certainly have been a funny script, that lost its steam in the process of translation to big screen.
In all, 'Sutta Kadhai' is a bright idea, which could have followed a more gripping screenplay to keep the audience involved, than just complete the procedure of getting the film done.
