With great expectations and the drums rolling, the hero, the hero Dhoni is introduced. But it turns out Dhoni (Shiva) is actually Ramarajan, as his mother had named him after her favourite hero. And similarly, Rajkiran alias Sehwag (Santhanam) enters the scene. The two gear up for a gang fight but instead choose to make peace and turn out to be friends; and with their occupation of joblessness matching, and their interests in living on parents' money being alike, they become best of friends.

When the heroine Seetha (Dhansika) is introduced with not much hype, things seem to move pretty fast hopeful of a crisp film. But then the screen play cheats us as it seems like an eternity by the end of first half. All the key characters are introduced in quick succession in the first half that covers how surprisingly Dhoni lands a government job against all odds, Power Star's love interest and the much older Counselor Aishwarya's (Devadarshini) melting love for Dhoni.

Dhoni desperately tries all possible wacky ways he could think of, to get to Seetha, and later to impress her. While most the funding for Dhoni's joblessness is supported by his sister and family, a portion of it also comes from constable Kanaka (Sandhya), Dhoni's cousin. Kanaka is incidentally Seetha's friend, Aishwarya catches hold of Sehwag to break Dhoni's love story, to establish hers own, and Power Star (Birbal) plots against Dhoni for an insult her had faced - but more than the missing sync in all this, the question of how come it happens all of a sudden is more apparent.

Just when Seetha discovers she has fallen for Dhoni and he chooses the right moment to propose his love, there is a twist that anybody least expected. There ends the first half, awaiting a nail biting second half that uncovers the truth - well, not really. It gets predictable from there. Will Dhoni's love succeed or will Aishwarya take the lead? What bitters Dhoni-Sehwag friendship? What happens to Birbal's grudge? The answers to all this opens on cue in the second half.

Come second half, you look forward to answers but it is not only predictable but also painfully distressing. The movie could have ended in the ten minutes that followed interval, but as it lacked direction, the story kept aimlessly flowing from one frame to another towards seemingly no particular concrete solution in the end. And to back the disorder, too many unnecessary details are thrown in, taking it all to a new height towards climax, that uncovers Santhanam's sudden love story, but fails to answer the question of why the heroine remains in the same costume for three full days.

The film has a handful of pluses too. Rewriting the convention, Santhanam has paired up with Sandhya, unlike the tradition where only a comic heroine becomes the pair of a comic hero. But, the story could have been more dignified. Dhansika comes in almost every alternate scene but her presence on screen is pleasant and her acting is almost flawless. There is a bag full of comedy scenes that you will love and also about half a dozen Santhanam one liners that you may want to include in your daily conversation. Unfortunately, the honeymoon seems to end there.

With so many characters and each carrying a story, it is difficult to fit all that into two hours, and hence the clutter is clear. With this, there are a couple of characters that carry meagre significance, without which the movie was still fine. A typical rom-com, this one has songs at all customary places, but that does not topple the story. Costumes and make-up have been taken good care of; this in combination with the screen settings have made the film a simple and pleasant viewing experience. Vijay Ebenezer's music is unique, but repetitive at places.

The cast has popular comedians and beautiful actresses. But all the talent seem underused in 'Ya Yaa'. With Shiva and Santhanam in the cast, a lot of laughter is looked forward to, but this film fails us. There are funny scenes to look for, but on a big picture, it looks like a few good comedy scenes glued together, based on a bleak story. In all, 'Ya Yaa' is good, yet somehow does not match up to the expectations.
