Trust Saravanan to bring you a gripping thriller, and he delivers bang on target. After the latest tamil hot movie phenomenal success of 'Engeyum Eppodhum', the director is here with action and romance,.seasoned with comedy, in 'Ivan Veramathiri'. As it was quite predictable from the trailer, this movie is all about questioning injustice. But the difference lies in the uniqueness employed. Far from the rigmarole slapping and punching, 'Ivan Veramathiri' is an intellectual and meticulous plan to question the wrong and standing up for the right.

Most youth movies begin in a college, and so does this. But this is vastly different from the regular ones. Law minister irks a riot in law college, and the action flick opens in a calamity among law college students, killing 3 and leaving scores injured. The city is unrest over the nonchalance of the cops who stood mere witness to the incident and not doing anything about it. Everyone wants to do something about the injustice, while Gunasekaran (Vikram Prabhu) actually does something. Unlike the normal fight at first sight, Guna follows Vamsi Krishna patiently until the moment is right to attack. With a murder on his name on the very day, Vamsi gets cornered at his gym's parking, where he gets beaten up, gagged and thrown into a dungeon, by a masked man. For the next six days, Vamsi spends his life without food and water, and tied down by ropes, by stench. Being the law minister's brother out on parole from his double life sentence, Vamsi is under strict deadlines to return to the jail. But as he remains kidnapped, he doesn't return, violating the law even further, also putting the law minister off his prized throne. Meeting at a quirky incident, followed by many other encounters, as though it was destined by the heavens, Guna sees Malini (Surabhi). Though the two develop mutual attraction, it is Malini who mouths it first. And all this in the same six days! On the seventh day Guna releases Vamsi on to the city roads, still gagged, and the latter vows to kill the masked man, no matter what. How he tracks him down forms the rest of the story.

Strikingly different from his debut, Vikram Prabhu is a classy, suave Viscom grad, on the hunt for a job, apart from running an innovative venture in collaboration with his friends. Ranging between a committed, zealous, patriotic young man, and a sincere lover with boyish charm, Vikram does justice to every role he takes up. Action is his forte and both the primary fight sequences have been tailor made for the new action hero in town. Given that the actor has portrayed an array of different characters with class, in the film, Vikram sure is a man quite different and one to look out for. Vamsi Krishna on the other hand is a sheer show stealer! Be it the ruthless monster murdering on the go, or the monster in leash, Vamsi is the perfect villain for a hero like Vikram. His six days of toil in the dungeon spotlight his talent, especially in scenes where he observes amidst the echoes in the half constructed multi storey, plots to kill, diligently jumps to stand at elevation and notes down the slightest evidence, which later proves a turning point in his hunt, unnoticed. With his super built-up macho physique and vengeance clear in his eyes, Vamsi makes an excellent material for bad guy, as demanded by the script. Surabhi as Malini is a charm, making for the sugary sweet relief in the spicy action tale. She is not overly made up and is not glamorous in any frame of the film. Simple, homely and elegant, Surabhi is convincing of her role as an engineering student, who would go to any extent for love.

Saravanan is known to make his stories gripping and racy. With Sakthi and Srikar Prasad for technical expertise, the director has re-established his name in the tinsel town with 'Ivan Veramathiri'. The film's screenplay slows down at places, but that is not entirely a shortfall. What is slightly disappointing is the logical continuity that takes a hit at a few places on screen. In this predominantly predictable story, there are only little twists and bends here and there, still adhering to the same thread of story. Gagged, yet in full consciousness to give a fight, Vamsi is thrown into the dungeon, carried to from a completely different ambience. The gym again is on a stilt, relative to the city traffic. Despite having feelings for Malini, Guna refuses to confess it, which happens suddenly over a tiny game of squash and he turns into a crazy lover at the other end of the song, presumably in the same week. All these could have received more care and attention. However, these hitches do not hamper with the movie experience at large.

The film opens on a positive note, with a motive to spotlight crime and falacy under the government's collar, but later turns into a one-on-one, as sings one of the tracks. Speaking of music, Sathya's job on the title track and chase sequence carry a smart attitude. But songs on the other hand aliterate a bit from the olden books. Given that the film on the whole gives more importance to action than romance, patches that demand musical support have been backed with fresh creativity. The flick on the whole has only two major action sequences with edge-of-the-seat fight scenes, while most of the action is takes cover under the abhorrent aftermath thereof. Climax chase sequence has a twist that makes you sit up with your back straight; cinematography here is exceptionally good, covering all the tumbling vehicles, smashing property and flying people in perfect detail.

After so much action and the arduous efforts to put the right on the face of the state, the evils seem to have been ripped off in a hurry in the end. The cop Aravindan (Ganesh Venkatraman) is introduced only in the second half; though he plays an urbane, sophisticated man with an astute attitude, Ganesh has only minimal screen presence. But for the while that he features, he entertains, particularly in the racy chase sequence. All said and done, 'Ivan Veramathiri' is different indeed, though reckonable.
